The First Chakra By Mohsen Paul Sarfarazi, Ph.D.

The root chakra that is located at the base of the spine, the storage source for our feminine energy, represents our connection to the mother earth [Gaia]. It constitutes the lowest vibrational frequency of our body. It is associated with the color red [anger] and the mantra of note C. It is driven by the reptilian part of us that with dominant masculine impulses of olfactory [smell], raw concern for sex, procreation, need for food, shelter, etc. which form the basis for animalistic survivalism. Furthermore, it is the key to the lowest dimensionality of the first and second, and represents the basis form of sentient consciousness that dictate the impulses of ‘fight or flight’ and separatism. The latter, in turn, is suggested to be configured, in terms of mass consciousness of the present 3-D earth, to manifest itself as money, materialism, desire for accumulation, and position/job distinction, etc. The interrelation between chakra and endocrine system in terms of functionality has been briefly addressed with particular reference to the first chakra and the adrenal glands. And, finally the function of certain parts of the physical body from the point of view of health problems and its related symptoms have been expounded upon with reference and applicability to the first chakra.

  • The first chakra is, alternatively, and appropriately, referred to as the ‘root chakra.’
  • It is located at the base of the spine.root-chakra
  • And, there, it houses our feminine energy.
  • It is has been associated with the four fundamental elementals of earth, air, water, and fire.
  • These have been analogized to four columns, depicting a sturdy structure based upon a strong foundation.
  • As a matter of fact, the number four has been associated with the shape of a “square,” which represents earthly honesty and simplicity.
  • The first chakra constitutes the lowest vibrational frequency of our body, characterized by its longest wavelength.
  • Consequently, it is illustrated by the color red, which corresponds to the lowest frequency in mankind’s’ visible light spectrum.
  • The color red also depicts anger as well as vigor and vitality.
  • The note “C” together with the mantra of “AAM” is chanted to invoke the accessing of the first chakra.

The Physicality, Raw Animalistic, and Survivability Aspects of the First Chakra

  • The first chakra rules our physical energies.
  • It represents fundamental raw energy, most basic to survivability. Survivability Illusion
  • It is, therefore, intimately associated with our olfactory and our sense of smell.
  • The sense of smell is the most primitive sense indigenous to ensuring survival in the most traditional animalistic manner.
  • The receptors for smell are located at the base of our brain and feed directly into our limbic system, which is also the area of memory and emotion.
  • Therefore, aromas can immediately access emotional memories stored in our unconscious.
  • It is also the first sense that humanity awakens to upon incarnation and physical birth or rebirth on Earth.
  • In fact, the first chakra rules birth to two years of age.
  • This is the time before we have completed our individuality and still perceive ourselves as an ‘extension’ of our parents.
  • This chakra represents our struggle to come to terms with our physical life and physical body.
  • Our Multidimensional Spirits now transforms to ‘Separation’ into new 3-D reality.
  • We still struggle to learn how to control our physical body.
  • Fortunately, we can easily travel into the higher dimensions at this age and can return Home to our HIGHERSELF, whenever we are desperately in need of comfort and understanding.
  • Initially, for mankind, survival means, endeavors associated with day to day essential physical needs such as food, shelter, and procreation, requisite for ensuring the continuity of the specie.
  • Anthropologically, the first chakra depicts the time we were cave dwellers.
  • At that time in our “civilization,” we lived from day to day.
  • Therefore, the first chakra is concerned with home, vitality, and grounding of the physical life.
  • Nowadays, survival insinuates ‘getting what you desire.’auric symptoms - money worries
  • Thus, in modern times the first chakra may be closely associated with money, job or work, materialism, and desire for accumulation, which are considered as concerns for “survivability.”
  • The chakras represent a part of our consciousness.
  • Each chakra represents how our unconscious and Superconscious SELVES communicate with our conscious SELF.
  • It constitutes our first and second dimensionality, ruling our first and second dimensional SELVES.
  • Our first dimensional SELF represents the genetic coding, cells, and minerals of our bodies.
  • It also represents our most primitive “animal SELF,” which is represented by the fight/flight response that serves to assure the survival of our specie.
  • The root chakra also rules the male sex glands and the testosterone that they secrete.
  • This testosterone drives the males in our society, and the male polarity.
  • Since the first chakra rules our first dimensional SELF, and it is unable to reflect upon itself, perceptions from our root chakra are usually unconscious.
  • The first chakra is, therefore, mostly associated with our unconscious mind.
  • In fact, the first dimensional portion of us can only be aware of a “hive/species consciousness or mentality.”
  • The first dimension is also associated with the mineral kingdom.
  • Earth is the element associated with the first chakra, with the mineral kingdom being at the top of its hierarchy.
  • Crystals have been prized by humankind for eons and have also been used in esoteric healing.
  • Although, the first chakra has many masculine attributes, it is, therefore, frequently associated with our relationship with our mothers and with Mother Earth/Gaia.
  • Our relationships with our mothers gives the first chakra its characteristic concerns for home and security, as well as hereditary.
  • If we are cut off from our roots, we feel cut off from the earth as well.
  • The second dimensional aspect of the first chakra represents our unconscious animalist traits, which constitutes our instinct motor skills, heredity, security, as well as survival concern for the specie.
  • The first chakra dictates our survival mentality, and represents our deepest unconscious and most primitive self.
  • This chakra represents the reptilian portion of our brain, which is our brainstem, our center for life support.
  • The brainstem and the area immediately above it are associated with the reptilian brain, and it is present in reptiles, humans, and indeed, in all other creatures.
  • The distinction being, in reptiles, this area is their entire brain.
  • In contrast, in humans it is the base, or stem, of their brain, thus referred to as the ‘brainstem.’
  • Appropriately, the astrological sign associated with the root chakra is Taurus, which is a bull.
  • The bull is a symbol of masculine power and fertility, the strongest bull able to preserve the genetic integrity of its specie, who serves as an alarming male, warning and warding off any ‘outsider’ who may threaten ‘his herd.’
  • In fact, the first chakra is the basis for both masculine and feminine energy.
  • It represents our ‘Taurus’ masculine will and male sexual organs.
  • Therefore, a man should learn to integrate his feminine power, and a woman ought to learn to integrate her masculine power through the clearing and opening of the first chakra.

The Endocrine Glands and the Chakra

  • Each chakra feeds prana into a different endocrine gland.
  • Just as there are seven chakras, there are seven endocrine glands.
  • Both the chakras and the endocrine glands are located along the spinal cord.
  • The endocrine glands manufacture hormones and supply them to the bloodstream.
  • These glands are called “ductless” because there is not a duct to any specific part of the body.
  • Instead, hormones are released into the bloodstream where they are carried by the blood to every organ and tissue to exert their influence on all functions of the physical body.
  • Each gland is internally related to the other glands.
  • And, also works closely with the nervous and circulatory system.
  • In order for the organs of the body to work efficiently, the blood must contain certain chemicals.
  • Many of these chemicals are secreted by the endocrine glands, and this secretion is vital for the health of the entire system.
  • Our bodies can become diseased if there are too much or too little hormones.
  • The endocrine gland for the first chakra is the adrenal glands.
  • There are actually two adrenal glands located with one on top of each of the two kidneys.
  • The adrenal glands are the body’s call to battle.
  • When adrenaline is released into the system our perceptions become clearer, we have added vigor and feel more courageous.
  • The release of adrenaline activates the fight/flight syndrome, which prepares us for “fight or flight.”
  • Release of adrenaline and activation of fight/flight is brought on by real or imagined danger.
  • Therefore, our emotions can activate a release of adrenaline when we feel extreme fear or even chronic anxiety.
  • The first chakra is the ‘survival chakra,’ and the fight/flight syndrome is vital for the survival of every species.

The Physical Body and the First Chakra

  • The chakras also represent a particular part of our body.
  • The first chakra is located near the sacral plexus.
  • The sacral plexus is the nerve center, which rules the legs, feet, skeleton, male reproductive organs, and the prostate.
  • In particular, the first chakra rules the lower portions of our body such as the legs, knees and feet, as well as our skeletal structure.

The First- Chakra – Related Problems

  • Tensions that are felt in our body are often sensed in our consciousness via our chakra system, and vice versa.
  • In other words, if we were having a first chakra problem, it would express through our Consciousness as difficulties with our daily survival, vital energy or dedication to physical life
  • And, as far as our body is concerned, the problems manifest themselves as pain or difficulties in legs, knees or feet, and our skeleton.
  • If there is a problem with the leg or foot on the right, masculine side of the body, it can indicate issues of trust in one’s will.
  • If there is a problem with the leg or foot on the left, feminine side, then it can indicate issues with trust of one’s emotional life.
  • When the first chakra is clear we feel secure, grounded, and stable.
  • We can use good “common sense” to balance our finances as well as our everyday responsibilities and still initiate new activities and interest.
  • Our eliminatory system functions well, neural activity in our legs and feet is healthy, and our ability to initiate sexual encounters is comfortable and natural.
  • Our root chakra is the home of the Kundalini.
  • When this chakra is clear and balanced the Kundalini can awaken and begin her gradual rise.
  • When the first chakra is unclear we feel insecure and fearful.
  • We can also become absent-minded because we are ungrounded.
  • We may also have a difficult time with our finances and day to day necessities.
  • The security that some of us derive from material things can become threatened.
  • There can also be problems with our home, which is our base of operations in physical life.
  • We can become self-indulgent and self-centered and suffer from depression and grief.
  • We may suffer from hemorrhoids, constipation, backache, or prostate problems.
  • All of the above emotional, behavioral, and physical health issues have to do with the lack of ability to ‘let go.’
  • We cannot let go of our sadness, let go of material sources of comfort when finances require, or even let go of the waste material of our bodies.
  • If we cannot release what is holding us back, we cannot move forward.
  • Difficulties with our sciatic nerve and problems with our legs and feet display this dynamic.
  • Prostate problems can arise from frustrated sexual or lack of creative drives.
  • Excessive adrenal glands’ secretion are associated with nervousness, hyperactivity, anxiety and depression.
  • Consciousness difficulties are connected with our lack of concern with daily survival, vital energy or dedication to physical life.
  • Love Frequency include: Unity with Mother Earth, grounded, vitality.
  • Fear Frequency include: Lack of stability and vital energy, disconnectedness from Earth and others.

  • Our physical body communicates with our consciousness by its state of health or disease, and comfort or discomfort.
  • Our Western society places so much emphasize on third dimensional individuality that it has lost sight of the fact that we are members of a greater whole.
  • We have forgotten that we are members of a planet that we must all share.
  • This forgetfulness has allowed us to overlook the fact that our individual destinies are intrinsically tied to the planet and the ALL.
  • Our physical bodies constantly send messages to us via the first and second dimension.
  • If there are disruptions and diseases on a genetic and cellular level, if the elements within our bodies are disrupted, if our energetics becomes unbalanced, there is a message that our body is sending us that must be carefully discerned.
  • If we have heard these messages, but if our behavior has not been altered, then we have not LISTENED.
  • We can deny or ignore our bodies within which we live, but it is difficult to deny or ignore our behavior.
  • Our actions interact with others to create a mirror that forces us to look at ourselves.
  • We can hold on to a victim consciousness or mentality, which allows us to stay in denial and lie to ourselves, but our actions do not lie.
  • In today’s world, a lot of our needs for survival are “getting what we want.”
  • We must learn to recognize that our actions dictate to us what we truly want, for that is what we find time to “do.”
  • And, materialism, accumulation of wealth, selfishness, false pride, futile ego-based self-indulgences, and carnal lust are not the answer.
  • They, in turn, lead to competition, envy, greed, anger, victim consciousness, karma, conflict, violence, and even war, which all represent low-chakra dissipative energy mechanisms.
  • Only when we can recognize the messages from our unconscious as they are displayed in our behavior, can we take full responsibility for our actions.
  • However, how much time do we have to learn to listen to these needs?
  • Has our individuality, which we so dearly prize in the West, cost us our ability to see the bigger picture?
  • When our first chakra is closed, it is difficult for prana to infuse our physical body.
  • We are then out of touch with our own power to listen to and respond to the needs of our body.
  • Our actions then become reactions, and our ability to take responsibility for our personal power is diluted into a dismal struggle for survival.
  • However, when the first chakra is awakened, spirit lives in matter and all of our behavior is directed by spirit, the spirit within our physical bodies and the spirit within our Earth.
  • We shall soon get the ‘Call’ to raise our Kundalini to meet our divine SELF.
  • It is then TIME to resurrect or ‘ascend.’
